Damdama Lake

Haryana's Largest Natural Lake — Aravalli Adventure Retreat, Sohna

Spread across the ancient Aravalli hills near Sohna, 24 km south of Gurugram, Damdama Lake is the largest natural lake in Haryana. Framed by rocky ridges and serving ~190 bird species, it is the most comprehensive adventure and nature destination within easy reach of Delhi NCR — combining water sports, camping, rappelling, and birdwatching in a single site.

A Glimpse into History

Natural Aravalli Catchment

Damdama Lake formed naturally in a broad depression within the ancient Aravalli range — among the world's oldest mountain systems. Seasonal monsoon runoff from surrounding rocky ridges fills the lake every year, sustaining its ecosystem through the dry months.

Haryana Tourism Development

Haryana Tourism established a lakeside tourist complex that grew progressively across decades, adding boating facilities, adventure infrastructure, and camping zones. Today, multiple private resort operators also operate along the lake perimeter, running year-round adventure programmes.

Birdlife & Wetland Ecology

~190 species use the lake, including painted storks, grey herons, purple herons, egrets, cormorants, and seasonal ducks. Post-monsoon (Oct–Jan) is peak season when the lake is full and migratory species arrive from Central Asia and beyond.

Natural Significance

Damdama is one of a dwindling number of intact natural water bodies in the rapidly urbanising Aravalli foothills of Haryana and Rajasthan. It supports a healthy migratory waterbird population and Aravalli scrubland ecosystem adjacent to the lake margins. Its proximity to Delhi NCR (60 km from IGI Airport) makes it the most accessible significant wetland from the capital city.

Activities & Adventures

Water Sports

Paddle boats, rowboats, kayaks, and motorboats operate on the lake from October to March. Zip-lining over the water and parasailing are offered by private operators on the shoreline. Boating is the primary draw for day-trippers from Gurugram and Delhi.

Adventure & Camping

Rock climbing, rappelling, zorbing, Burma bridges, and Aravalli ridgeline walks are offered by resort operators. Multiple camping resorts around the lake provide bonfire evenings, outdoor cookouts, stargazing, and early morning bird walks — popular with corporate groups and student trips.

Did You Know?

The Aravalli hill range surrounding Damdama Lake is geologically estimated to be 1.5 billion years old — making these rocks among the oldest exposed rock formations on the Indian subcontinent. The seemingly modest rocky ridges around the lake are eroded remnants of mountains that were once taller than the Himalayas, worn down by 1,500 million years of erosion.
